|Louise Dambach knocked a clutch three-pointer to confirm the game in over-time for France|
France had to work overtime to take a day one success at the U18 European Championship Women in Matosinhos after grinding out a 55-50 win against Russia in a defensively dominated Group A encounter.
Turning Point: Louise Dambach hit a huge three-pointer for France in overtime with 90 seconds remaining to make it a two-possession game and that proved to be decisive in swinging the pendulum the way of Les Bleues in a tight contest.
Game Hero: As well as Dambach for hitting what proved to be the game-winning shot, Marie Milapie was one of the few players to find her offensive rhythm and her efficient 12 points stood out.
Stats Don't Lie: There was very little if anything to separate victory and defeat in this match-up and arguably the only difference was the big three-pointer of Dambach. Russia only scoring once in overtime was also key.
The Bottom Line: This game had an air of inevitability about it since both teams will be eyeing up a podium challenge. This won't change for Russia despite losing as they will know that their star playmaker Kseniia Levchenko had a rare-off night with nine turnovers and will surely bounce back. France will be delighted with a winning start but will know they must also play better offensively and this result could have gone their way.
