|Lorenzo Williams chipped in with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 3 asissts|
BK Ventspils got the win they needed to advance from Group C of the EuroChallenge but Zepter Vienna made sure they had to fight every inch of the way to earn it, 61-56.
Ventspils were on the backfoot for almost all the first half before using a 23-4 run that spanned the break to turn the game in their favour.
But even then it remained tense with Vienna within three points just 10 seconds from the finish.
Vienna knew they were destined for last place in the group regardless of the result but nevertheless dominated the early stages, leading 22-13 when Benedikt Danek sank a three-pointer with 5:36 to go in the second quarter.
But Maris Gulbis replied with a three that was to start a huge run for the hosts.
They tied it at 22-22 on Ronalds Zakis' lay-up and a jump-shot from Lorenzo Williams gave them a narrow lead at half-time.
Early in the second half, back-to-back threes from Gulbis and Williams made it 35-26 to the hosts.
Vienna stayed in touch and made it a one-possession game time and again without being able to level the scores.
Marko Kolaric's lay-up made it 59-56 with 10 seconds to go, but Williams split a pair of free throws with Gulbis grabbing the offensive rebound, and Gulbis finished it off from the line.
Gulbis finished with 14 points while Williams had 13, Janis Timma 11 and Akselis Vairogs 10 for Ventspils.
Kolaric led Vienna with 19 points.
Vienna Head Coach Darko Russo
"First of all I want to apologise to BK Ventspils, because we played zone defence for 40 minutes. We were forced to do so - 5 of our 9 main players had different injuries. For example, Kolaric was playing with a broken nose. As I said, playing in zone was the only option for us, if we did not want to lose with -30. Ventspils is a good team, with a good coach and I want to congratulate them."
Vienna Player Florian Trmal
"We, as a team enjoyed this experience in the EuroChallenge. Today we did not manage to win, but we did our best. Now we have to prepare for the next season in EuroChallenge and the next game, in the Austrian championship."
Ventspils Head Coach Roberts Stelmahers
"Congratulations to everyone for this win! Today we did not have an easy game. Through blood and sweat we managed to win. We still have important games ahead of us."
Ventspils Player Akselis Vairogs
"Before the game we knew that this is not going to be an easy game, because the Austrian team had nothing to lose. Serbians know how to play basketball and they showed it. We lost too many neutral balls - this is the mistake that we should not make in the following games, because then there will be no excuse."
