Vilmantas Dilys came up big for Tartu Rock, scoring 23 points as his team defeated Sodertalje BK 76-72 on the road to advance from Group B in first place.
The big man, who joined Rock in late November, scored six points in the last 2:31, his last two free-throws effectively clinching the win at 75-70 with only seven seconds to play.
Sodertalje had to endure a horror start, watching Tartu open an 11-0 gap after only two minutes of play after Janar Talts converted a lay-up for the Estonians.
This basket seemed to be the wake-up call for the Swedish side as they clawed their way back into the game, Mantas Griskenas tying proceedings at 17.
The hosts even went up 24-21 after ten minutes but suffered a week second quarter, finding themselves down 39-43 at the half.
Tartu jump-started the third frame with four quick points, but it were Sodertalje who held the upper hand in that frame, going into the final quarter with the scores tied at 59.
It took Rock five minutes, before they were able to open a bigger gap once more, a Gert Dorbek jump-shot making it 65-60.
Tobias Borg and Toni Bizaca repeatedly reduced the deficit to three points, but Dilys always found the right answer, carrying his team over the finish line.
With Ventspils prevailing over Vienna in the other game of the Group, Sodertalje are left out of the Last 16 field with Rock taking first place ahead of Ventpils.
Tartu Rock guard Augustas Peciukevicius
"It was a nervous and tough game, as it was all or nothing. Our opponents had a much better game than in Tartu, in particular their pick-and roll defense. But I think that we also made a good defensive job tonight, which gave us the win."
Tartu Rock head coach Gert Kullamäe
"After a splendid start we lost our rhythm, very much because of the Södertälje defense. They changed some things in the defensive end, but we tried hard to push the ball inside as we knew we had an advantage in size, and did it well. Our big guys also made some great shots when they where pushed out on the perimeter. We managed to pull it off and I´m happy thet we won the group after our poor start in the tournament."
Södertälje Kings guard Martin Pahlmblad
"You cannot win European games if you loose the rebounding as much as we did today, 31-44. Despite that, we really had a good chance of winning the game. We had some good and open shots in the end, but could not make them tonight. I am very disappointed, as we once again were eliminated in the last round."
Södertälje Kings head coach Vedran Bosnic
"Of course I am frustrated, but on the other hand, we lost to a great team and a big club, with resources that we do not have. Our players gave all they had, and we knew we needed a perfect game to beat them. It was close, but the rebounding and their big guys, in particular Dilys, had a great game. In my opinion, we lost the game at the end of first half, when we gave them several easylay-ups to finish the quarter 7-0."
