|Leonor Rodriguez had a EuroLeague Women career-high 14 points for Perfumerias Avenida|
Play-off bound Perfumerias Avenida had to survive a late onslaught from WBC Novi Zagreb to cling on to a dramatic 77-76 road success in EuroLeague Women Group C.
The home side had been on the back foot right from the early exchanges, but almost saved the day with a stunning late rally which just fell short as Lisa Karcic missed the chance with two seconds remaining to wrap up an outstanding comeback.
Already eliminated from play-off contention, the hosts showed huge spirit as they tried to overturn a poor first-half display, but Avenida dodged the bullet to pick up their fourth win in five games.
The Spanish side raced out of the blocks and took a double-figure lead at 16-6, before Zagreb shooter Eva Komplet made a score to reduce the margin to 24-19 by the end of the first quarter.
However, WBC Novi Zagreb were back in disarray midway through the second period as Avenida soared to a 36-21 advantage.
The visitors were still ten points in front at the interval after a basket by Marta Fernandez on the buzzer and it was the same margin at the end of the third quarter too.
Avenida looked to be on course for a decisive victory but hit a huge drought in the last four minutes when they only scored once and almost paid the penalty.
Zagreb scored the last six points of the contest, but couldn't grasp their last-gasp opportunity to sneak a win.
Luca Ivankovic, Elina Babkina and Milica Dabovic all scored 17 points for the home side, whilst Leonor Rodriguez hit a EuroLeague Women career-high 14 points for Avenida.
Novi Zagreb Head Coach Vladimir Ivankovic
"Congratulations to my team for the second half. I wasn't happy with how we played in the first half, so we made some changes. Congratulations to both teams for a good game."
Novi Zagreb Player Lisa Karcic
"It is unfortunate that we couldn't finish the game off after having a strong second half. We played hard and just have to stay postive and carry this feeling to our final game against Sparta&K."
Perfumerias Avenida Head Coach Victor Lapena
"It was a very important game for our confidance before the play-offs. In the second half we did not play defence like in first half and that is why Novi Zagreb came back in second half."
Perfumerias Avenida Player Marija Rezan
"We played bad in the second half. For Novi Zagreb this wasn't an important game so they played very well. The most important thing is that we won this game. Novi Zagreb is a better team than last seasson and I wish them all the best."
