|Angel McCoughtry led Fenerbahce to their 11th-straight EuroLeague Women vcitory with 14 points|
Fenerbahce sealed top seeding for the next round as they notched their 11th straight EuroLeague Women victory with a 71-62 road win over Rivas Ecopolis.
The Turkish team have proven themselves worthy of the tag as one of the pre-tournament favourites with a series of dominant displays, and coach Roberto Iniguez's players controlled the match, leading for the final three quarters.
Rivas put up a good fight however, and made it a one-possession game when Swedish star guard Frida Eldebrink converted a three-point play with less than five minutes remaining. Fenerbahce turned up the intensity and didn't allow another field goal as they showed their class to pull away down the stretch.
Aside from Eldebrink's 16 points and a double-double from Laura Nicholls (21 points, 11 rebounds), Rivas struggled to find offensive production.
In contrast Angel McCoughtry led a balanced attack for the visitors with 14 points, alongside Polish forward Agnieszka Bibrzycka's perfect effort from the field with 14 points from six successful shots and no misses. Cappie Pondexter added six points and six assists for Fenerbahce, who will aim to finish their perfect Group B campaign with victory at home against BK IMOS Brno on 26 February.
Rivas Ecópolis Head Coach José Ignacio Hernández
"Fenerbahce is a tough team, hard to play against, quite powerful, and we were missing Allison tonight. But we managed to compete, to come back when they built a big lead and stay in the game until the end. But in those moments, when you have players like Pondexter, that can step up in key moments after not having a great night, it's harder to find solutions. But I want to acknowledge the hard work from my players, I'm happy with the effort shown on the court."
Rivas Ecópolis Player Frida Eldebrink
"I think we played a good game, coming back in the second half. We played together and defended good. I think it's true that I'm regaining my confidence in the last games after the injury that I suffered in our first EuroLeague Women game. I'm feeling better every day on the court."
Fenerbahce Head Coach Roberto Íñiguez
"I want to congratulate Rivas for the effort made all game long, even without Allison, they showed what kind of team they are, how they are working in spite of the injuries they're suffering. We had some problems especially in the third period, and I blame it on the relaxation that we might have suffered. We know that we can be a good team when we give it all, but at the moment we have some lack of focus we are just a normal team, and we let them score some easy baskets at certain moments."
Fenerbahce Forward Angel McCoughtry
"Rivas made it a very tough game, they have good players and good coaches, they came back in the third period doing a good job. We knew that we had to focus again to secure the win and play hard until the end. I think they took a good advantage after I was called for a technical foul and narrowed the difference, which forced us to play hard to win this game".
