GAME REPORT

Nadezhda Dominate To Secure Second

24. Dewanna Bonner (Nadezhda Orenburg)
Dewanna Bonner produced a stylish 21-point, 13-rebound double-double for Nadezhda Orenburg

After a slow start, Nadezhda Orenburg's offence clicked into gear to claim a 74-53 win over Wisla Can-Pack, and ensure second place in EuroLeague Women Group B.

Nadezhda had dominated the previous meeting and the Russian team came into the crunch match in good form, but Wisla had recorded four wins in five EuroLeague Women games since that defeat on Polish soil.

The hosts knew that a victory would wrap up second position in the group but they came out sluggish, with nine turnovers and 4-for-13 (30.7%) shooting as Wisla took a 16-9 first-quarter lead.

Nadezhda shot 23-of-38 (60.5%) the rest of the way as they stormed back, taking their first lead of the night on Anna Cruz's shot with 15 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

The combination of Dewanna Bonner and Natalia Anoikina was giving the visitors huge problems, and the pair both ended with double-doubles. Bonner had a game-high 21 points with 13 rebounds, and Anoikina ended with 13 points and 11 boards as Nadezhda made the most of their size advantage, crushing Wisla on the glass (49-28).

Cruz provided a spark off the bench, with 16 points off 7-for-10 (70%) shooting after Zoi Dimitrakou had struggled, the Greek guard pressured into seven turnovers by the visitors' defence. But offensively Wisla struggled as Jantel Lavender was held to 6-16 (37.5%) shooting.

Lavender's double-double (13 points and 11 boards) and Allie Quigley's 16 points in a tireless 40-minute performance were in vain for Wisla as Nadezhda created separation in the third quarter, with Temeka Johnson's three-pointer extending the lead to 11.

A 12-0 run capped by Cruz in the final period made the game safe for the hosts, who will move forward to Round 2, finishing 7-5 to take second place in Group B. Wisla (6-5) finish with a home game against BLMA on 26 February.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Nadezhda Orenburg vs. Wisla Can Pack

Wisla Can-Pack Head Coach Stefan Svitek
"We started the game in a very good way but we didn't do what we planned. We missed our easy shots and lost in rebounds and on defence. Of course, one can't win the game with so many mistakes on offence and defence and 19 rebounds lost."

Wisla Can-Pack Player Alexandria Quigley
"The game was very tough, we started very well but we failed to stick to the game plan. In the second quarter we felt like we were completely out of the game and rebounds just killed us. I think, this is why we lost today."

Nadezhda Orenburg Head Coach George Dikeoulakos
"In my opinion this was a game of two similar teams. For us it was the last game in the first ELW round and therefore we were rushing to win. I had a feeling my team wanted to win the game in the first three minutes and that resulted in so many of the mistakes we made: we had 19 turnovers with 10 of them in the first quarter. After the first half it was necessary to relax, calm down the team and I'm happy I found the proper words [to achieve this]."

Nadezhda Orenburg Player Dewanna Bonner
"I give my credits to the opponent because they tried their best but we managed to concentrate on the game after a very tough first quarter. That was a big game for both teams. My team managed to settle down and find our game."
