Dewanna Bonner was unstoppable, leading Nadezhda to another victory after the horror start to the season |
Nadezhda Orenburg continue to turn around their EuroLeague Women season after claiming a third consecutive win in Group B with a late run earning them a 77-64 victory at Lattes Montpellier.
Having lost to the French side on home soil during opening night in the first of four straight defeats, the decision to subsequently hand the reins to head coach George Dikeoulakos continues to pay dividends.
As for Lattes Montpellier, they were hamstrung by the loss of leading scorer Shameka Christon who left during the winter break and also suffered from some foul trouble as they allowed a good opportunity of a much needed win to slip.
Having worked hard to get themselves into a valuable 31-23 lead shortly before half-time, BLMA couldn't stop Nadezhda working themselves back into the game during the third quarter.
Neither team could then make a decisive break and after numerous lead changes, the scores were tied at 62-62 heading into crunch time.
Unfortunately for home fans, their team could only manage one basket during the last four minutes, as Nadezhda outscored their rivals 15-2 to run away with a priceless success.
DeWanna Bonner starred for the winning team with 26 points, whilst Glory Johnson had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Geraldine Robert had 22 points and seven rebounds for Montpellier, but they still dropped to a fifth defeat in a row.
BLMA head coach Valery Demory
"We allowed them back into the match immediately after half-time. The difference between the teams was little mistakes which cost us dear. We're not eliminated yet."
BLMA player Virginie Bremont
"We had a 10-point lead and allowed them back into the match with a lack of discipline. It's very frustrating as we really wanted to win."
Nadezhda head coach George Dikeoulakos
"I'm very happy with the result as we played badly, and we have a superior point difference too. At half-time we changed things around and were fortunate enough to equalise very quickly."
Nadezhda player Glory Johnson
"It was a fast-paced game, and BLMA played aggressive defence and really made us work hard for the win."
