|Zsófia Fegyverneky confrimed her status as the franchise player for UE Sopron, scoring 18 points against Rivas|
UE Sopron collected their first EuroLeague Women road win of the season with a hard-fought 65-60 victory at Rivas Ecopolis in Group B.
It was also the first time the Spanish hosts have lost at home as Sopron claimed back-to-back victories to move level with Rivas with a 3-3 record.
Zsofia Fegyverneky excelled for Sopron with 18 points, although there was a nervous finale after the Hungarian national team star fouled out of the game during the last minute.
When Serbian forward Sara Krnjic put her team in front at 8-7 during the early exchanges, she probably didn't expect her team to hold on to their lead for the remainder of the encounter - but that is exactly how it panned out.
And, it was Krnjic who had taken her team out to a 37-24 advantage shortly before half-time, helped by the visitors doing a good job of controlling the glass.
Boosted by the confidence from their victory a week earlier against Lattes Montpellier , Igor Polenek and his players subsequently managed to keep Rivas at arms' length for long periods.
They suffered a slight wobble in the last closing moments as Gaby Ocete twice made it a one-shot game, but free-throws from Zsofia Simon and Kelly Faris got them safely over the finishing line.
Ocete and Queralt Casas both scored 17 points for the losing team.
Rivas Ecópolis head coach José Ignacio Hernández
"The game was decided on small details. We suffered after a bad start, missing up to six three-pointers in the first quarter. We were bad on defence, but got better after the second quarter. We have a small core of players that are racking up many minutes and because of that we are missing fresher legs this time of the season. All in all, we were just down by three points with five minutes to go, and were not able to take the lead, so I think Sopron deserved the win. And it's always hard to beat a team that hits a 100% of their free throws."
Rivas Ecópolis guard Gaby Ocete
"We never stopped fighting, which is something our team shows week in week out, but we're missing some players which can make us feel tired. We always play to our best, but we committed some defensive mistakes. We have to try and play as fast as we did early on in the season to go back to winning games."
UE Sopron head coach Igor Polenek
"First of all I want to thank the home team for letting us use their uniforms. After the incident we suffered with the luggage, the people of Madrid and their club demonstrated to be good people. Tonight we saw the two youngest teams of the EuroLeague playing each other, I think we saw a good game. Then we suffered a minor injury by Hawkins, but we were able to hold on to an important victory."
UE Sopron guard Zsófia Fegyverneky
"It was a good game, we stopped Rivas from playing the way they like. We were focused all the time, very disciplined, and we reached a very important win, I'm so happy about it. Also Rivas played good, they were missing one player, but so we did after Hawkins got injured. We were strong on the inside."
