|Elodie Godin sealed the deal for Famila Schio as they upset Bourges in front of a big crowd in France|
Beretta Famila Schio ended their winless away run with a 61-55 success at Tango Bourges in their opening Group A EuroLeague Women game of the season.
It is five games and almost a year to the day since Schio won on the road in EuroLeague Women and this victory came thanks to a 12-0 run early in the second half.
The visitors led 7-6 after one as both teams made an awkward opening.
The play picked up in the second period however and Elodie Godin scored seven of her game-high 20 points, including the final basket of the half to take a 23-19 lead into the break.
Godin then responded to a three-pointer from Celine Dumerc and a jump shot from Emmeline Ndongue with baskets of her own, the second sparking the scoring surge that would swing the contest in Schio's favour.
That run took the score to 37-24 and only once more would Bourges get back within two points, at 44-42, but even then Godin had an answer and once more it led to a scoring run.
In truth, Schio were never unduly troubled as Laura Macchi added 18 points, although FIBA Europe Women's Player of the Year Celine Dumerc did post an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double.
"Today my team was weak, we didn't play at a European level, we need to play harder for this kind of game. Offensive quality was not here and Beretta Famila had a very good defense and push us to play far from the paint. I'm disappointed we missed this first European date."Bourges point guard Celine Dumerc
"Our offensive play was not at the right level for this first major game. They played very well with a good defense and good success at shooting. We need to play harder in the game, more concentrated in our strategy and to be present for 40 minutes."
Beretta Famila power forward Elodie Godin
"We were very concentrated and focused on our strategy during this game, and I'm very happy because all the team played very well even if we were missing players due to injuries. I'm really happy for the team. Personally , I was very happy to play another time in Bourges after three beautiful years here, and it's good to perform well here."
Famila Schio head coach Miguel Martinez Mendez
"We performed a complete game even if it's the beginning of the season, we are missing players and we still need to improve our play, but I'm satisfied by my team. They demonstrated patience and they were really focused on the strategy. It was a good game."
