|Marcel Ponitka fired Poland to victory with 18 points |
Poland battled past Latvia to make it three wins out of three in the classification round at the U16 European Championship.
Latvia, winless in Group G, came out firing as Karlis Garoza set the tone with a dunk eight seconds into the contest, and an 11-0 run to end the first quarter - highlighted by Kristers Zoriks' three-pointer - gave them a 21-14 lead.
But Poland responded in kind in the second period as they outscored Latvia 19-9 to assert control, 10 unanswered points giving them a 29-23 lead on Marcel Ponitka's lay-up.
Their advantage would have been greater at the interval were it not for a buzzer-beating three from Miks Antoms, but Poland ensured it did not matter as they continued to pull away in the second half.
They led 46-39 on a pair of free throws from Mateusz Gawlina and then used a 14-3 run to put Latvia away, Michal Kolenda making it 66-50 with a lay-up with 5:35 remaining.
Ponikta led Poland with 18 points while Wiktor Sewiol and Jakub Mijakowski added 14 each and Michal Kapa 13.
Zoriks collected 15 points for Latvia with Madars Kokins scoring 10.
Although Poland have secured first place in Group G, they know they still have work to do this weekend to secure their Division A status in the new look relegation-round.
