|Nik Slavica showed great form for Croatia, scoring 19 points|
Nik Slavica and Lovro Mazalin poured in 19 points each as Croatia marched into the second round of the U16 European Championship Men unbeaten following victory over Latvia.
Croatia, looking for a third title in four years at this level, turned in yet another impressive performance as they used strong finishes to both halves to see off Latvia.
Having found themselves down by a point at the end of the first quarter, Croatia scored seven unanswered to start the second, leading 24-18 on Ante Zizic's jump-shot.
By the time Ivica Zubac got the tip-in from Franko Kalpic's miss, it was a 16-1 run and Croatia led 33-19 with 4:12 left in the first half.
Latvia reeled off eight quick points, capped by Kristers Zoriks' three to cut the deficit to six at half-time and kept on fighting, drawing level at 39-39 when Arturs Strautins followed Miks Antom's jump-shot with a three-pointer with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter.
Strautin's next basket gave them a brief lead but Croatia ended the quarter with a 6-0 burst.
Latvia did their best to stay in contention early in the fourth quarter and Marcis Saulitis' jumper made it 59-53 with 2:05 remaining.
But after Renars Birkans missed a three for Latvia, Mazalin nailed one for Croatia and late baskets from Dragan Bender and Slavica ensured there was no way back.
Zizic finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for Croatia, while Zubac had six points and 10 boards.
Verners Kohs led Latvia with 10 points.
