|Vasileios Mouratos and Greece repeatedly had to fight off strong Russian surges but prevailed for their second win|
Greece moved to 2-0 in Group A of the U16 European Championship Men as they held off Russia in a hard-fought game, dropping their opponents to 0-2.
Greece were on the defensive for almost the entire second half after building a big early lead, but dug deep when it mattered to keep their noses in front.
They were much quicker out of the blocks and had established an 11-2 lead on Vasileios Mouratos' three-pointer before Russia knew what had hit them.
The first quarter ended with a Dimitrios Flionis lay-up that made it 17-9 and left Russia with plenty of work to do.
They set about it in the second quarter, and when Timofey Yakushin sank a three-pointer with 2:01 left before half-time the deficit was down to 27-25.
But Greece responded with Flionis sank a three to make it 34-26 at the break.
Russia regrouped in the third quarter to launch a new assault on Greece's lead.
After Dionysis Skoulidas put Greece 37-31 up, Ilya Karpenkov hit back with a a lay-up before two threes from Dmitrii Cheburkin saw Russia claim the edge, only for Greece to quickly take it back with five quick points, highlighted by Flionis' lay-up from an outstanding behind-the-back pass from Skoulidas at high speed.
Russia tied it up again at 45-45 with the first basket of the final stanza, but Greece then began to edge away, and when Ioannis Michaloutsos sank a jump-shot with 5:33 to go, they were 57-47 ahead.
Karpenkov responded with a three-point play for Russia but Greece were edging away and when Skoulidas got a tip-in they were 66:52 up with 1:50 left to play.
Russia came back again with seven straight points but when it looked like Karpenkov might add two more with 42 seconds left to make it a five-point game, the ball rolled around the rim and off.
Greece accepted the good fortune and iced the game from the free throw line as Papagiannis and Mouratos made key shots.
Flionis led Greece with 16 points while Mouratas and Georgios Papagiannis had 12 each, Papagiannis adding 13 rebounds. Vasoleios Charalampopoulos also scored in double figures with 11 points.
Yakushin finished with 19 for Russia while Karpenkov added 15.
