|Maria Fasoula paved the way for Greece|
Greece retained their U16 European Championship Women Division A status with a gutsy 49-46 win over Lithuania in classification action.
Greece ended the opening period with an 11-2 run after a slow start, taking a 16-14 lead through Zafeirenia Karlafti's lay-up. Lithuania scored seven successive points to regain the lead in the second quarter, Laura Juskaite contributing six of them.
Maria Fasoula had two early baskets to help Greece score six unanswered points to start the second half but the game remained close, and Juskaite's buzzer-beating lay-up cut Greece's lead to two heading into the fourth quarter.
Fasoula came up big with two blocks down the stretch, and Garyfallia-Paraskevi Ntanou's shot put Greece eight points ahead with 2:14 remaining. Rasa Knyzaite hit a three-pointer as Lithuania tried to respond, and with the lead down to three in the final seconds, Knyzaite launched another long-distance effort, but it fell short as Greece held on.
Fasoula's great contribution totaled 18 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks, while Ntanou added 12 points, six rebounds and six steals. Juskaite's double-double (14 points and 13 rebounds, plus fivesteals) was in vain for Lithuania, who will play the Netherlands on Saturday knowing that the loser will be relegated to Division B.
