Turkey brought to an end the undefeated run of Greece at the Sportland U20 European Championship with a 72-70 success on Wednesday and took first place in Group E.

The Turkish will now go up against Russia in the quarter-finals, while Greece will face Spain.

No one could have predicted the dramatic end to the Wednesday clash when Turkey stormed out of the locker rooms to score the first 18 points in the game in a powerful display.

The shell-shocked Greeks reacted after the first five minutes and gradually reduced the difference, yet Turkey reached the midway point comfortably ahead, 36-27.

Ioannis Papapetrou and Michalis Kamperidis however combined for 10 quick points shortly after the start of the third frame to bring Greece ahead for the first time, 41-39 with five minutes remaining in the period.

The Greeks went seven points up when Papapetrou hit a triple with 1:18 to play in the third but Turkey's Tayfun Erülkü, with a beautiful coast- to- coast play, reduced the gap to 54-53 at the third buzzer.

Erülkü found support in the final frame and Turkey came back into the driver's seat with consecutive baskets while the Greeks went through a dry spell.

Turkey regained their 10-point lead but Lefteris Bochordis made a last-ditch attempt at another comeback and brought Greece within two points with a three-pointer 37 seconds from the final buzzer.

The Turks called a time-out but misfired when they returned to execute their play, however Greece turned the ball over on their last possession and did not manage to take a shot to either tie or win the game.

Erbil Eroglu led all Turkish scorers with 23 points while Erulku finished with 19 points, four rebounds and three assists and Ramazan Tekin chipped in with 11 points.

Bochorids finished with a game-high 24 points and Papapetrou added 20 points for the Greeks in losing efforts.
