The Iberian side went almost two minutes without a basket at the start of the game but then reeled off 27 points in eight minutes to take a 12-point lead, 27-15, at the end of the first period.

Russia came up with answers on the defensive end and gave up only 10 points in the second frame to reduce the gap to 37-30 at half-time.
