|Ahmet Tuncer going for the game-winning shot for Turkey|
Turkey guard Ahmet Tuncer drilled a jump-shot with five seconds on the clock to give his team a 74-73 win over Croatia in a thrilling clash on the opening day of the Sportland U20 European Championship in Tallinn.
The eventual winners led for most of the encounter on Tuesday, and by as much as 10 points, but a hard-nosed Croatia kept breathing down their necks and the lead changed hands six times in the final five minutes.
The two sides entered the fourth quarter tied at 54 but Turkey started better and pulled ahead once again, 64-59.
Time and time again, Croatia found their way back and put themselves in the driver's seat, if only momentarily.
With just 11 seconds left on the clock, Henrik Sirko picked up an offensive rebound and made the lay-up to put Croatia ahead, 73-72, in what seemed like the fatal blow to Turkey's chances.
But Turkey called a time-out to draw their final play and passed the ball to Tuncer, who kept his calm and sunk the shot that gave his team their first win in Group B.
Berkay Candan paved the way for Turkey with 17 points and four rebounds, Erbil Eroglu chipped in with 14 while Tuncer finished with 11, including the game-winner.
Croatia's loss was particularly harsh on Matej Buovac, who went 5-for-7 from behind the three-point arc and finished with a game-high 20 points.
