Hungary Shut Down Portugal In 2nd Half

Jermaine Dontay Thomas and Hungary played strong defence in the second half versus Portugal

Hosts Hungary gave up only five points to Portugal during an 11-minute stretch in the second half to pull away for a 65-52 win in EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round Group E action on Wednesday.

The Hungarians have now improved to 3-1 in the group standings while Portugal have dropped to 0-4 and have abolished any chance to qualify to next year's big event.

A brave Portugal reached the half-time break holding a 32-30 lead and the game had seen 11 lead changes when, 7:52 from the end of third quarter, Zoltan Supola scored his only basket in the game with a lay-up to push Hungary ahead, 37-36.

Few could imagine that this was going to prove a crucial point in the encounter, as the hosts decided to tighten the screws on defence, made the most of their advantage in the paint and reached the third buzzer with a double-digit lead, 53-42, on a Krisztián Wittmann three-pointer.

Hungary kick-started proceedings in the final frame on a 10-0 run as big man Akos Keller, with a dunk in transition 7:27 from the end, gave them an unassailable 63-42 lead.

On the next possession Mario-Gil Fernandes finally hit a mid-range jumper to stop the almost 11-minute long rot for Portugal, but it was too late for the guests to attempt a comeback and Hungary, who scored 42 of their 65 points in the paint, celebrated the win.

Wittmann paced the winners with 16 points, Keller finished with 14 points and three boards and Jermaine Dontay Thomas chipped in with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists.

For Portugal, Arnette Hallman collected 15 points and nine boards in defeat.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Hungary vs. Portugal

Mario Palma, Head Coach Portugal

"We lost Da Silva at the beginning of the game, then we had a terrible 3rd quarter. Congratulations to Hungary. We are a young, unexperienced team, still learning international basketball."

Joao Soares, Portugal

"Losing Da Silva and a bad restart at the second half were too much for us. In the 3rd quarter we could not control the game. Without our scorer (Da Silva) it was too much to handle."

Krisztián Wittmann, Hungary

"We knew this would be much more difficult than the first match in Portugal. Luckily in every game we had a good 5-6 minutes, when we played very good basketball. Today it happened in the 3rd quarter when we could increase our lead."

Stojan Ivkovic, Head Coach Hungary

We tried to play our own game from the beginning, but we had serious problems with our centers. What else, our defence wasn't hard enough. In the second half we played much better basketball and won this very important match. Big thank you to our fans and our host city Kecskemét!
