Germany outscored Austria 13-0 in the final minutes of their Group C clash in the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round, to reach an 88-69 win and maintain their hopes for a place in the big tournament.

The hosts had to work much harder on Sunday than the final score suggests in order to avoid a loss that would terminate their campaign prematurely.

Germany imposed a frenetic pace early on and found easy scores in transition as they had 12 fast-break points and 15 points off Austrian turnovers in the first half of the encounter.

This level of productivity enabled the Germans to jump to a 28-14 lead shortly before the end of the first quarter.

Austria however balanced proceedings in the second frame thanks to their superiority on the glass.

The guests claimed seven offensive rebounds in the first half and scored 10 second-chance points to reduce the gap to just 45-41 at the half-time break.

Austria pushed ahead in the third and Thomas Klepeisz, with a lay-up 45 seconds from the third buzzer, gave them their biggest lead, 63-59.

Germany's response was swift and it fell upon the guests like a ton of bricks.

Heiko Schaffartzik restored the hosts in the lead, 65-63, with a triple immediately after the start of the fourth period and the veteran guard again drilled another three-pointer with 5:06 remaining to give the Germans a 75-67 cushion.

Rasid Mahalbasic reduced to 75-69 from down low on the other end with 4:34 left on the clock, but that would be Austria's last points in the game.

Germany continued to hit their shots from the floor and make the best of their trips to the charity stripe while Austria, who had started off on 5-for-11 from beyond the three-point arc, missed all of their long-range attempts in the fourth and finished on 8-for-25.

Dennis Schröder was excellent for Germany and led the way with 24 points and six assists, Maximilian Kleber added 15 points and five rebounds and Robin Benzing chipped in with 14 points and five boards.

For Austria, Mahalbasic finished with 17 points and five rebounds and 21-year-old Jozo Rados came up with 12 points and six boards in losing efforts.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Germany vs. Austria

Emir Mutapcic, Head Coach Germany
"Today we had two main goals: to win this game and to win it by more than ten points to have a good chance to qualify. Both goals we could accomplish against a very strong Austrian team. We started well but after that four or five turnovers made Austria strong und let them back into the game. In the fouth quarter we showed a lot of character and did not only fight but played well. I hope that we will be qualified with this win."

Maximilian Kleber, Germany
"We had a good start today but then we made some mistakes defensivly. The Austrian players are difficult to stop. The most important thing is that we won this game. We always knew that we can win it. We did not have any thoughts about not winning it. Of course we had pressure but we had to handle it."

Werner Sallomon, Head Coach Austria
"Congratulations to Germany. I am dissapointed because I think that we had a chance today. We  made it difficult ourselves because we played wild and without discipline after coming back in the second and third quarter. Most of my players are not familiar with this level so we lost control. Finally the result is ok, we abandoned the win at the end."

David Hasenburger, Austria
"We overslept the beginning of the match. After that, we played very well in the second and third quarter. Germany changed up at the end and we couldn't follow."
