Iceland will participate next summer in a EuroBasket tournament for the first time in their history, despite losing 78-70 to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, in the game that concluded the 2nd Qualifying Round.

The Nordic nation's team finished in second place in Group A, behind Bosnia and Herzegovina who claimed top spot on a perfect 4-0 record.

Bosnia and Herzegovina travelled to Iceland without their captain and superstar Mirza Teletovic but nevertheless made crystal clear early on they had no intention to blemish their impeccable record.

Elmedin Kikanovic and Nemanja Gordic spurred the Balkan team to a 24-12 lead shortly before the end of the opening frame, but that would turn out to be their biggest lead all night.

Iceland balanced proceedings and Pavel Ermolinskij drilled a triple with 3:41 remaining in the second quarter to bring the hosts ahead, 38-37.

Ermolinskij hit his second three-pointer of the night immediately after the start of the second half and Iceland went up 50-43, to the delight of the local crowd.

The rugged Bosnia and Herzegovina however are not a side that will simply roll over and Kikanovic, with his 20th point of the night, tied the scores at 58 shortly before the third buzzer.

Logi Gunnarsson gave Iceland their last lead in the game with a free throw 7:31 from time, 64-60.

In the four-minute stretch that followed the Bosnian defence denied Iceland any open looks and Marko Sutalo, with a mid-range jumper 3:22 from the final buzzer, capped off a 12-0 run for the guests that saw them jump ahead 74-64.

Kikanovic finished with a huge double-double of 26 points and 14 rebounds while Gordic and Sutalo, who were also superb for the winners, collected 15 points apiece.

For Iceland, Jon Stefansson had 21 points and Hördur Vilhjálmsson added 12 points and four rebounds.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Iceland vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina

Craig Pedersen, Iceland Head Coach
"For me, getting to EuroBasket hasn't sunk in yet. It's a huge thing and right now I'm extremely happy for the players that have put in 14-15 years of work, spending every summer with the guys they like to play with, and to accomplish this goal. It's incredible for them."

Jón Arnór Stefánsson, Iceland
"We qualified for EuroBasket tonight and we played a great game tonight in front of a sold out gym, we are over the moon. It has always been a dream to qualify for a tournament like EuroBasket and I'm going to enjoy playing at this big stage."

Dusko Ivanovic, Bosnia and Herzegovina Head Coach
"I´m very happy with the game and our performance. This was a tough game, much tougher than our game in Tuzla against Iceland. The Icelandic team played a good game with a small line-up. I am excited for the future of Bosnian basketball. We had a young team here today that played well without Mirza Teletovic so I am looking forward to us permorming well at EuroBasket 2015."

Nemanja Gordic, Bosnia and Herzegovina
"This game was much tougher than I expected. But overall I am happy with the game and how we played. The atmosphere in our team is very good and the future for Bosnian basketball is bright."
