Two-time defending champions Spain defeated Poland 60-29 in the opening game of Group B at the U20 European Championship Women in Samsun on Thursday.
Sparked with Yurena Diaz hitting her shots from downtown, Spain finished the first and started the second quarter with a 9-0 run. During the spurt, Poland was held scoreless for more than 11 minutes, as the reigning champions built a 33-13 lead and kept it comfortably for the remainder of the game.
It was a turnover-plagued encounter, as the teams combined for 47 turnovers, and no team scored points for an almost seven minute period bridging the third and the fourth quarter. Back-to-back triples from Itziar Llobet and Andrea Vilaró snapped the drought, making it 48-24.
Spanish center Astou Ndour dominated the paint, being the only player in double figures with 23 points in addition to nine rebounds in less than 23 minutes. Diaz finished with nine points while Dominika Owczarzak had eight in defeat.
