GAME REPORT

Bonn Hang On To Clinch Quarters Berth

6. Benas Veikalas (Telekom Baskets)
Benas Veikalas retained a cool demeanour at the line at the death for Telekom Baskets, making two key free-throws with four seconds left

Telekom Baskets Bonn will join EWE Baskets in the quarter-finals of the EuroChallenge after holding on to beat their German rivals on the road 92-88.

It was the first defeat in Group L for EWE Baskets, who were already sure of progression, and they certainly did not make it easy for Bonn in a close contest that saw the lead change hands 12 times.

Bonn took the lead for the final time when David McCray hit a three to make it 72-69 with 6:41 to go, but even though they were ahead the rest of the way, EWE Baskets were never far behind as they kept the pressure on.

Christopher Kramer's lay-up cut the gap to 83-82 with 2:32 to go before Jamel McLean's free throws and following lay-up gave Bonn an 87-82 advantage.

But EWE Baskets came back again, Kramer making a lay-up and then Robert Smeulders hitting a pair of free throws after Robert Vaden could only split his to make it 88-86 with just seven seconds left.

Benas Veikalas held his nerve, hitting two free throws for Bonn to make it 90-86 with four seconds left, but Julius Jenkins replied with a swift lay-up and they needed Kyle Weems' late free throws to be sure.

McLean poured in 28 points for Bonn while Weems had 14, and Veikalas 12. McCray, Vaden and Chris Ensminger had 10 each.

Kramer led EWE Baskets with 19 points while Jenkins had 14, Dru Joyce 12 and Adam Chubb 10.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: EWE Baskets - Telekom Baskets

Oldenburg head coach Sebastian Machowski
"I have to congratulate Michael and his team for this win. We wanted to stay unbeaten in this competition and we failed to achieve this goal. After already being first in our group we had a hard time focussing and concentrating. Bonn deserved to win this game today because they wanted it more than we did tonight."

Bonn head coach Michael Koch
"I'm proud of my team tonight. We won tonight because we hit some big shots in the fourth quarter. Plus, we managed to improve our rebounding in the second half. We played with a lot of confidence today which comes from playing well the last couple of weeks."

Oldenburg player Konrad Wysocki
"Both teams played hard tonight...it was a tough game. Bonn never made it easy for us and hit some big shots in the fourth quarter. We now have to learn from our mistakes and continue to work hard."

Bonn player Jamel McLean
"This game was important for both teams. Both teams wanted to advance to the next round. It was a hard fought game but we prevailed. We won tonight because we made some big shots down the stretch and rebounded the ball well in the second half."
