GAME REPORT

Bonn Hold Their Nerve To Win Opener

Kyle Weems (Telekom Baskets)
Kyle Weems iced the final result from the free-throw line

Telekom Baskets Bonn hit key free throws in the final minute to continue Okapi Aalstar's disappointing start to 2013 with a 65-60 victory in their EuroChallenge Group L opener.

A tight contest in which neither team ever led by more than five - and the lead changed hands 29 times - went all the way to the wire.

But when it came to crunch time Bonn scored the final six points of the game to come from behind and take the win inside the final 60 seconds.

Christopher Young's dunk had given Okapi a 60-59 lead with 75 ticks left, but they were the last points they would score.

Twenty seconds later, Jonas Wohlfarth-Botterman hit a lay-up to put Bonn back in front.

Derek Raivio missed a lay-up for Okapi and Benas Veikalas drew the foul to go to the line and add two more points.

Thomas Dreesen then came up empty with a three-pointer and Bonn killed the clock before Kyle Weems settled it with two more shots from the line.

Weems finished with 15 points for Bonn while Veikalas had 12 and Chris Ensminger 10.

Ioana Tofi led Okapi with 15 points while Noah Hartsock had 14 and Raivio 12.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Okapi Aalstar vs. Telekom Baskets Bonn

Okapi Aalstar head coach Brad Dean:
"I think that the offensive rebounds were the dominating factor in this game. Even at the end they took a very important one that was deciding for winning this game. Due to injuries this wasn't our normal style of playing."

Okapi Aalstar player Noah Hartsock:
"It was a very tough and physical game. We stepped up after a losing streak but it wasn't enough to win this first game in the Last 16. We fought till the last minute but a few mistakes at the end killed us."

Telekom Baskets head coach Michael Koch:
"Tough game with a lot of intensity at both ends of the court. It's a pity; this was not the Aalstar team that we had analysed as they were missing two key players due to injury. At the end of the game we had a little bit more luck than Aalst and took some big shots to win the game."

Telekom Baskets player Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann:
"I think it was a great fight and a close game. It was a tough win and we have to focus on the next game against Oldenburg next Wednesday."
