GAME REPORT

Medias End Karsiyaka’s Unbeaten Record

Ivan Ivanovic (Gaz Metan Medias)
Ivan Ivanovic was one of five players to score in double digits for Gaz Metan Medias

Gaz Metan Medias upset the odds to pull off a much-needed 77-69 win and end the unbeaten record of Pinar Karsiyaka in Group I of the EuroChallenge Last 16.

Karsiyaka may have been cruising at the top of the group but they were also reeling from an early exit from the Turkish Cup last week, and they ran into a Medias team playing with all the urgency needed to get them off the foot of the Group I standings.

Medias went to work early, and nine unanswered points powered them into a 21-9 lead on Ivan Lilov's lay-up late in the first quarter.

They continued to pull away early in the second and Rares Mandache's lay-up midway through the period gave them their largest lead of the game, 38-20.

Pride kicked in for Karsiyaka as they rallied with a 14-5 run, closing it up to 43-34 on a William Thomas dunk shortly before half-time.

They did their best to chip away in the third quarter, but got no closer than seven, with Thomas' free throws closing it to 45-38 at the 7:43 mark in the period.

Medias' response was swift, and Ivan Ivanovic dunked to follow up Lilov's three and it was 56-40.

Karsiyaka's heads looked to drop as Medias continued to edge away, but there was a sting in the tail as a 12-0 Karsiyaka run closed the gap to 74-69 with 33 seconds left.

However, Jon Diebler's jump-shot proved to be their final points of the game as Medias saw it out from the line.

Lilov led Medias with 15 points while Mandache had 14, Ivanovic 12, Zoran Krstanovic 11 and Aleksandar Mladenovic 10.

Thomas poured in 28 points while grabbing 14 rebounds for Karsiyaka, while Robert Dixon and Can Mustaf added 11 each.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes CS Gaz Metan Medias vs. Pinar Karsiyaka

Pinar Karsiyaka head coach Ufuk Sarica:
"I want to congratulate the home team. We couldn't find our rhythm; we had a bad start in the game. We prepared this game to win it, but on the court we didn't make the necessary things to achieve that. That means we have work to do and fix the problems until next game."

Pinar Karsiyaka player Jon Diebler:
"It was a tough game for us. We knew that Medias is a hard place to play, they have a good record here at home. Gaz Metan played extremely hard tonight and we didn't have an answer for it. We tried to come back in the game, but as I said they played really hard."

Gaz Metan Medias head coach Marcel Tenter:
"We succeeded to set our rhythm in the first 20 minutes. We scored easy points; we had over 40 points in the first half of the game against a very good defense. I think that counted a lot. In the second half we had a good intensity and also we succeeded to defend [Robert] Dixon closely. This victory, it's an event for us."

Gaz Metan Medias player Ivan Lilov:
"I still don't have an explication for this game, how it feels to win a game like this. We played really hard, we did what the coach said and I think it was one of our best games."
