A fourth-quarter rally from Kormend fell short as they dropped to 0-2 in Group F of the EuroChallenge, with Szolnoki Olaj taking their first win 96-92.
The visitors never trailed in this all-Hungarian clash, but only just as Kormend came roaring back at the finish.
Szolnoki had taken control early, leading 21-10 on Brandon Gay's lay-up late in the first quarter and going up 40-19 when Akos Horvath nailed a pair of free throws midway through the second period.
The lead was 51-37 at half-time and the game seemed as good as over as Miklos Szabo's three-point play gave Szolnoki a 77-60 lead going into the final period.
But Kormend scored the first nine points of the final stanza, with Andras Rujak's lay-up cutting the gap to 77-69.
It was down to 80-75 with 5:25 left when Matthew Shaw made a lay-up, and it was Shaw again who made it 84-82 with 3:31 left on the clock.
Shaw then hit a three-pointer to tie it 86-86 with 1:58 on the clock and a stunning victory appeared to be on the cards.
But Gay hit back with a three of his own and Marton Bader then made it a five-point game with a lay-up.
When Bader split his free throws with 15 ticks left, Szolnoki were up 96-90, and although Rujak got two back from the line, Kormend had come up short.
Bader led Szolnoki with 33 points and 14 rebounds while Horvath had 21 points and Ernests Kalve 15.
Shaw collected 25 points for Kormend, with Zvonko Buljan adding 20, Rujak 19 and Vincent Simpson 17.
