|Shenise Johnson made the right decisions in crunch time to spark Sopron's victory|
UE Sopron needed a three-pointer in crunch time by Shenise Johnson to finally despatch Arras 56-52 in Group B after the French side almost came back from the brink to take an unlikely win.
It was hard work for the Hungarian club against an Arras team who just wouldn't lie down and gave themselves the best possible chance of success by ensuring a scrappy and defensively dominated game.
Struggling in the French League and not exactly brimming with confidence, the visitors who are arguably lacking in firepower, knew defence was the key and they almost did enough to dig out the victory.
Arras actually enjoyed the better of the exchanges in the first half, holding a 26-20 lead after a basket inside by Sandra Dijon, and they went on to briefly increase their advantage early in the third quarter.
However, they then began to wobble and Sopron subsequently pounced, outscoring their opponent 16-8 during the period to take control.
The hopes of Arras looked as if they had been comprehensively extinguished during the final quarter when Johnson made a jumper to put Sopron 52-41 ahead, but Arras came storming back to get home nerves jangling but it was too little too late.
Johnson finished with 16 points and Jelena Milovanovic celebrated her return to Sopron with a double-double.
Johanne Gomis recorded an efficient 12-point haul for Arras.
Arras head coach Petit Thibaut:
"Our defense was very good, and Sopron played also well in defense. The difference was the shooting percentage."
Arras player Johanne Gomis:
"That was our first game in the EuroLeague Women, and we didn't know what we can await from us. But we started the game well, and after that we felt, we have chance to play a good game. We fought until the end."
Sopron head coach Norbert Székely:
"It was a bad game, but we also have to win games like this. Both sides changed tactically a lot during the game. We couldn't play in our rhythm, only when we played more small players. That's why we won."
Sopron player Zsófia Fegyverneky:
"Arras has shown how a French team plays in defense. We are not ready, we made a lot of mistakes, so we have to work a lot! But we won, so we can be also happy."
