|Alana Beard was instrumental in her comeback for Wisla Can-Pack, scoring 16 points|
Wisla Can-Pack bounced back from last week's mauling in Vidnoje as Tina Charles and the returning Alana Beard propelled them to a 74-66 victory against Rivas Ecopolis in EuroLeague Women Group A.
Having already won the first match-up with Rivas on Spanish soil, Wisla head coach Jose Hernandez will have been delighted to complete a double over one of his teams' main rivals as the fight for play-off positioning continues.
He mainly had Beard to thank for the win, coming back from her recent injury to post a shooting performance which harvested 16 points and was the perfect accompaniment to the 22-point, 14-rebound display by Charles.
In stark contrast, Rivas play-caller Miguel Mendez will be disappointed his team spilled the ball 23 times which proved costly.
The visitors had led 21-18 and looked reasonably comfortable, but Beard intervened and really got Wisla rolling with three baskets in a row.
It acted as a springboard for the Krakow club and their fans enjoyed watching the home favourites kick on, eventually taking a 37-29 half-time lead.
Things didn't improve for Rivas when they took to the floor for the second half, falling further behind as a Charles basket made it 49-35 and by the time Spanish playmaker Cristina Ouvina scored at the hoop at the end of the third quarter, the margin was an insurmountable 16 points.
Rivas managed to add a touch of respectability to the final score line and threatened to give Wisla the jitters when they narrowed the gap to 68-64 with a minute remaining, but the hosts held firm to take the win.
Ukrainian forward Oleksandra Kurasova top-scored for Rivas with 15 points.
Rivas Ecopolis head coach Miguel Martinez Mendez
"First congrats to the winning team. We played, especially in the first half, very bad defence. But we came here to win and that was very important for us. In the second half, particularly the last quarter, it looked much better but it was too late. For sure we lost against a very good team."
Rivas Ecopolis player Katalin Honti
"We are very dissapointed because winning was our goal. In the first half, like the coach said, we played very, very poor defence. We made the mistake of watching Tina Charles and the other Wisla players were scoring. In the last quarter we were very close - I think within four points - but we lost. In the next week we will fight to win at home to get the best possible position in the play-offs."
Wisla Can-Pack head coach Jose Ignacio Hernandez
"I am happy. It was so important to win. I am happy with the attitude of my players during the first three quarters. I am happy with their defence. We beat a very important and strong team who are well-known in Europe for their fantastic defence."
Wisla Can-Pack player Dora Horti
"Like the coach said we played very good defence for three quarters. We are still improving that element. Congrats to all my team mates and thanks to our fans."
