There was a palpable sense of both joy and relief in Krakow as Wisla Can-Pack got off the mark in EuroLeague Women in fine style by inflicting a first loss of the season on Group A leaders Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje with a convincing 76-64 win.

Head coach Jose Fernandez led an understandable outpouring of emotion on the final buzzer after his team put together a wonderfully stirring display to avoid an unthinkable 0-4 start to the campaign.

Whilst Tina Charles will take the headlines for another fine double-double after landing 26 points and 13 rebounds, this was an excellent team performance - full of energy and real verve.

Crucially, Anke De Mondt found the hot hand from three-point range to sink four triples on her way to 18 points, but it was Spanish playmaker Cristina Ouvina who epitomised this performance with an excellent all-round display at both ends of the floor.

The defence of the hosts was also fundamental since they did a great job in locking down the likes of Candice Dupree who had been on fire for the previously unbeaten visitors.

Sparta&K enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, but once the home side got the scoreboard ticking over, the confidence and belief flooded through the entire Wisla team as a 17-5 run either side of the first and second quarter break lit the fire that continued to burn brightly.

Once in front, Wisla managed to keep Sparta&K at arm's length in impressive fashion, and the icing on the cake came during the closing seconds when debutante Alana Beard sunka three-pointer to round off a wonderful night.
