Pops Mensah-Bonsu had a double-double and unbeaten Besiktas Milangaz brushed aside another opponent in the EuroChallenge with a 75-64 victory at BC Nizhny Novgorod.
The Turkish outfit improved to 2-0 in Last 16 Group K on Tuesday with Mensah-Bonsu scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Carlos Arroyo added 14 points for Besiktas while Zoran Erceg and recent signing Adam Morrison poured in 11 apiece.
Can Akin also contributed 10 points and came up big when Besiktas took the lead for good late in the second quarter.
The game was knotted at 24-24 in the second quarter when Akin buried a jumper for Besiktas, a basket that triggered an 8-0 run.
BC NN closed the gap to four with a jump shot from Michal Ignerski and a hook from Valentin Iurchik, only for Mensah-Bonsu to sink two free-throws and then Arroyo to bury a three-pointer with four seconds to go in the first half.
Besiktas went to the break on top, 37-28.
The hosts shot 65.2% (15 of 23) in the first half.
Nizhny Novgorod pulled to within 37-32 a minute into the third quarter on a drive by Ivan Paunic.
But David Hawkins split a pair of free-throws and Akin knocked down a three-ball to stop the BC NN comeback cold in its tracks.
Besiktas kept the pressure on and went in front by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter.
Mensah-Bonsu, who took a backseat to teammate and fellow big man Ersin Dagli in a home triumph over BK Pardubice last week, scored 10 of his points in the first half on Tuesday.
BC NN are now 0-2 in the Last 16.
Artem Yakovenko and Ernest Bremer had 14 points each in defeat.
Zoran Lukic, head coach of BC NN:
"I want to congratulate Besiktas for their win. Our opponent made an important 8-0 run at the end of the second quarter, and they broke away. They retained the difference in the score till the end of the match and didn't give us any chance to reach them. Our players couldn't handle their opponents. It was really hard to play against them. From time to time we succeeded to create a good situation but we missed open-jumpers and rebounds. In the end, the game was won by the team that was better."
Ergin Ataman, head coach of Besiktas Milangaz:
"We tried to play smart and it was a really good game, especially from a strategic point of view. In the beggining we tried to play tough against Bremer and Paunic. We controlled the rebounds and tried not to let Nizhny Novgorod play their usual offensive game. We also tried to balance and have every player scoring. It was a very important game for us, Nizhny Novgorod is a good team, but today we had more concentration."
Semen Antonov, BC NN player:
"We missed experience and luck today. Our percentage from open-jumpers was low. What's the most important we lost the battles of the boards. Though, we scouted all these things before the game. When we tried to help a team-mate, we often were not ready to handle their big players under the basket. The visitors played very effectively in offense, not letting us get back into the game in the second period."
Pops Mensah-Bonsu, BC Besiktas Milangaz player:
"Personnaly I just wanted to make sure I play hard, establish myself in this game and help my team as much as possible. I know this competition is rather tough, so I just wanted to make sure our team establishes itself."
