GAME REPORT

Telekom Baskets Rout Szolnoki

13. Anthony Gaffney (Telekom Baskets)
Anthony Gaffney scored 26 points in just 28 minutes for Telekom Baskets Bonn

Szolnoki Olaj may have won decisively over Okapi Aalstar last week but they were no match for Telekom Baskets in Germany on Wednesday.

In the EuroChallenge Last 16 Group J game, the Bonn team led by as many as 25 before coasting to an 89-75 triumph with Anthony Gaffney scoring 26 points.

Michael Koch's side, leading 22-20 early in the second quarter, reeled off 17 of the game's next 19 points to take a vice-like grip on proceedings.

After Talor Battle scored, Benas Veikalas caught a pass from Jared Jordan and nailed a three-pointer.

Battle then followed with a lay-up for a 29-20 advantage.

Telekom Baskets kept the pressure on and took a 48-30 lead to half-time.

They were in total command the rest of the way.

Telekom Baskets, after falling in their Last 16 opener to Okapi, rebounded with a last-second, come-from-behind victory over Elan Chalon last week.

Wednesday's victory improved the club to 2-1 in Group J while Szolnoki dropped to 1-2.

Hristo Nikolov had 25 points in defeat.

Telekom Baskets had 25 assists to just seven for the Hungarian team.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Telekom Baskets vs. Szolnoki Olaj

Szolnoki Olaj Head Coach Péter Pór
"The key element of the game was Bonn's defense, that took away our best player for 40 minutes. This being said, our offense fell apart after the first quarter. We struggled to find open shots, which led to Bonn being able to pull away early in the second stanza."

Telekom Baskets Bonn Head Coach Michael Koch
"The key to winning this ball game was defending on a high level and taking care of Obie Trotter never getting a rhythm going. Our defensive goals were to make sure neither Trotter nor Akos Horvath find a way into the game. Instead Hristo Nikolov stepped in, but that‘s something we could accept. We wanted to show Szolnok right from the beginning that there is nothing to win at our home today."

Szolnoki Olaj player Akos Horvath
"Congratulations to Bonn. We knew Bonn would try to run the floor at an up-tempo pace. We never got a real rhythm going on offense and tried too many things individually, instead of sticking together as a team."

Telekom Baskets Bonn player Jared Jordan
"It has been an important win for us. We kept the momentum we created in the second quarter going, although it was tough to play an equally intense second half after our spurt before the intermission. Last week's game against Chalon and today's match-up with Szolnoki help us get into the groove for the Bundesliga classic against ALBA Berlin this coming Saturday."
