It's been 17 long years since Ukraine won the European title.
They looked like an all-conquering team against Portugal on Wednesday in their EuroBasket Women 2013 Qualification Round game, rolling to a 92-38 victory in Group A.
Vadim Czeczuro's side reeled off the contest's first 10 points and never looked back.
Oleksandra Kurasova and Alina Iagupova each had four points in that run to open the game.
Ukraine were on top 22-10 at the end of the first quarter and had a 46-16 stranglehold on proceedings by half-time.
The second 20 minutes were a mere formality as Ukraine cruised to victory.
Kurasova had 15 points and both Iryna Tsekova and Viktoria Mircheva weighed in with 13 apiece.
Ukraine beat the Portuguese in every facet of the contest, including out-rebounding the visitors 50-23.
The hosts shot 10 of 22 from long range with Tsekova drilling all three of her attempts.
The games will be harder for Ukraine in the days ahead.
Their next encounter is at Israel on Saturday while Portugal will be at home against Belarus.
Ukraine head coach Vadim Czeczuro
"The main thing is that we played focused, played well in defense in the first game. I always tell my basketball players to play aggressively on defense. We played very well in this match."
Ukraine forward Olena Zherzherunova
"The game was very easy for us. We expected to be nervous, trembling and anxiety in the first game. But we played very well."
Portugal forward Ana Oliveira
"We were nervous at the beginning of the match. I think in the second half we played better. This is the first game, it will be a lesson for us and the next game will be better."
Portugal head coach Ricardo Vasconcelos
"The game was really difficult for us. We started really bad. Ukraine played tough defense. We were unable to cope with their defense."
