Germany encountered stiff resistance from Azerbaijan but avoided becoming their second upset victim in the EuroBasket Qualification Round on Monday.
Svetislav Pesic's team pulled away in the final minutes at Azerbaijan for an 85-68 victory - their fourth triumph in as many Group B games.
Bulgaria had fallen on 18 August in Baku, 88-73, and the Germans only led 63-57 with just under seven minutes remaining.
Three-balls from Lucca Staiger and Per Gunther of Germany sandwiched a basket by Azerbaijan's Orhan Haciyeva to give the visitors a 69-59 lead.
Following a jumper by Charles Davis, which gave him a game-high 31 points, Tibor Pleiß buried a jump shot and then Gunther drove in for a lay-up to stretch the advantage to 14.
Aleksandr Rindin's three-point played trimmed the deficit to 11, but Staiger killed off their chances with back-to-back shots from the arc and Tim Ohlbrecht knocked down a jumper on a fast-break to give Pesic's squad its biggest advantage of the night at 83-64.
Staiger ended up leading a balanced Germany attack with 18 points.
Heiko Schaffartzik finished with 16, Pleiß and Robin Benzing 15 apiece and Gunther 14.
Germany dominated the glass, with 15 of their 41 rebounds coming on the offensive boards.
Davis ended up with a game-high 31 points as Azerbaijan slumped to 2-2.
Germany head coach Svetislav Pesic
"We needed to play like a team tonight. Our defense was key for us. We did not want to give Azerbaijan's talented offense any confidence. We had to stop Fuad, Zaur, and Basak, and our teamwork on defense was essential to win this game. I am very happy that we continue to do well in our rebounding an important part of any victory."
Azerbaijan head coach Elkhan Aliyev
"Even though I am disappointed by our loss, I feel that we played a very tough physical game. I am proud of my players' effort, they didn't give up at any time during the game they kept coming back cutting the lead to 6 points late in the game. I give Germany a lot of credit, their bench played well for them tonight."
Azerbaijan player Orhan Haciyeva
"The German players used their height and strength to put a lot of pressure on us physically and didn't give us an easy path to the basket. It was definitely a battle inside the lane. Both teams played hard they hit some crucial shots in the final minutes and we didn't. We need to take our lessons and put the rest behind us as we prepare for the next game."
Germany guard Heiko Schafferzik
"We had to find a way to stop Chuck Davis and Bashak their other shooters. They were very strong and and we had to break their zone, our outside shooting was key for us. Lucca, Robin, Per, myself and others were able to hit the big shots, that helped us pull away in the final minutes. It was a team effort."
