GAME REPORT

Germany Edge France In Group A Opener

Dennis Schröder (Germany)
Germany guard Dennis Schröder scored the winning basket with four seconds left on the clock

Germany snuck out a hard-fought 54-52 victory against France in Group A to begin the U20 European Championship on a positive note.

The win is even more impressive considering the Germans had one of their leaders, Daniel Theis, leaving the court with an injury already in the first quarter.

The French side started the game better with Rudy Gobert scoring the first seven points for the team, but Germany overcame the loss of Theis and came back from an early 8-point deficit to take the lead.

Johannes Voigtmann was the only German player in double digits with 10 points, Mathis Monninghoff had nine, while Patrick Heckmann and Dennis Schroder chipped in with eight points each in a low-scoring game.

Axel Toupane had a game-high 11 points for France, while Livio Jean-Charles added 10, but neither could save the team from the upset.

Germany will face Serbia on Friday with hopes of improving to 2-0, while France will aim to bounce back with a win against Montenegro.
