GAME REPORT

Besiktas Scrape Win At Artland

7. Zoran Erceg (Besiktas Milangaz)
Big man Zoran Erceg had 24 points and eight rebounds for Besiktas Milangaz

Besiktas edged Artland Dragons in a thrilling Game 1 of their EuroChallenge Quarter-Final series in Germany.

Carlos Arroyo scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half on Tuesday night, including a go-ahead free-throw with just three seconds remaining, as Besiktas claimed a 74-73 victory.

Brandon Thomas had pulled Artland level with two free-throws just 22 seconds from the end.

After Besiktas called a timeout, the Turkish club ran the clock down to just a few seconds and Arroyo launched a shot from behind the arc.

He missed, but was fouled by Bryan Bailey on the attempt.

Arroyo made the first free-throw but then missed the next two to leave Artland with a chance to claim victory.

After a timeout, Nathan Peavy, a Puerto Rico international like Arroyo, missed from three-point land as Besiktas claimed a one-point win.

Besiktas, who led by as many as 10 points early in the contest, got 24 points and eight rebounds from Zoran Erceg while Pops Mensah-Bonsu scored 22 and grabbed 10 boards.

Anthony Hilliard and Thomas each scored 13 points while Peavy poured in 12 and Anthony King 11.

King also finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Artland Dragons vs. Besiktas Milangaz

Besiktas Milangaz Head Coach Ergin Ataman
"Our strategy in the first quarter was successful, we controlled it, played good defense and moved the ball well to play good offense. When we went up ten points, Artland started to play more aggressively and we lost control. We started to make turnovers and offensively the second quarter was our worst. In the third and fourth quarter we played a little bit better against the aggressive defense of Artland and found open shots for Zoran Erceg. But we missed also some easy shots and made some mistakes at the end of the game, that's why Artland had the chance to tie it. We only made one out of three of the last free-throws, but it was too hard for Artland to score in less than one second."

Artland Dragons Head Coach Stefan Koch
"I think we lost the game in the first half. In the last two possessions, they got three free-throws, we didn't get those free-throws. It is hard to win a game when you get twice as many fouls as the opponent. My team played well, much better than in the last few weeks. But we didn't play well enough to win the game."

Besiktas Milangaz player Marcelus Kemp
"It was a tough game, we missed some open shots. We didn't play good defense. We have to play better in the next game."

Artland Dragons player Anthony King
"It was a hard-fought game, both teams played hard. We made some mistakes in the end. So now we have to go to Istanbul and get a win."
