Tampereen Pyrintö beat Szolnoki Olaj 77-69 to take the upper hand in their EuroChallenge Qualifying Round tie.
But the Finns may rue a 13-1 run over the last four minutes of the contest by the visitors which has given them a fighting chance of winning on aggregate.
The second leg will be played next week in Hungary.
Tampereen Pyrintö's 27-year-old point guard Antero Lehto led the hosts with 20 points while Antwine Williams had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Damon Williams 13 with nine boards.
A convincing victory looked to be theirs when a Brant Bailey lay-up put them on top 76-56 with 4:11 to go.
Marko Derasimovic had five points and Obie Trotter four in the closing run for Szolnoki Olaj that has helped keep them alive in the tie.
Trotter's 19 points paced the Hungarian team.
Tampereen Pyrintö's free-throw shooting left much to be desired as they sank just 10 of 20 attempts on the night.
