GAME REPORT

Minsk-2006 Blow Out Sokhumi To Advance

BC Minsk-2006 fell flat last week in a heavy defeat at Sokhumi but bounced back to claim a place in the EuroChallenge Regular Season.

Thrashed 94-78 in the first leg of their Qualifying Round tie in Georgia, Minsk stormed to a 97-63 home triumph on Tuesday evening to win the tie by 18 points on aggregate.

Julius Hodge led the Minsk team's rampage with 23 points.

The forward also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

Aliaksei Lashkevich added 20 while Justin Hawkins and Aliaksandr Kudrautsau contributed 18 apiece.

Minsk were so soundly beaten in the first leg that they couldn't afford to waste any time making inroads in the second meeting.

By the end of the opening quarter, the comeback was well and truly on.

The Belarus side led 15-8 and at half-time, the second-leg advantage had ballooned to 38-23.

Sokhumi still had their noses in front on aggregate but the hosts weren't to be denied in the second half.

Two Hawkins free-throws and five straight points from Kudrautsau stretched the lead to 54-31, and when Aliaksei Trastsinetski scored to cap the 10-0 run, Minsk had a 56-31 advantage with 4:42 left in the third quarter.

Minsk pulled away for a decisive win.

By the end of game, the home side had out-rebounded Sokhumi 46-31.

The visitors had just two assists all night.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes BC "Minsk-2006" vs. Sokhumi

Andrey Krivonos, Minsk-2006 head coach:
"We took count of all our mistakes in Tbilisi, and overcame them [for this second leg]. This was our best game to date, the players start to understand each other well.  And we believed that we can win and continue our participating in Eurochallenge."

Alexei Lashkevich, Minsk-2006 player:
"After our lost in Tbilisi every one of us played with a big desire to win. We tried to show our best and work at maximum not looking at the score. We won because we were a team."

Ainars Bagatskis, Sokhumi head coach:
"We were not a team today. Every team play as well as their opponent let them play. Today we gave Minsk-2006 the possibility to show their best game but we did everything wrong. In basketball there are only wins and losses. Today we lost."

Brandon Gay, Sokhumi player:
"I'm very upset. Everything was wrong and we didn't play as we could. I think the blame is for everybody in our team."
