ETHA Clinch Opener On Road In Edirne



ETHA Engomi are off to a flying start in the EuroChallenge after claiming an 82-70 Group F triumph at Olin Edirne in their opening game on Wednesday evening.

Darryl Jackson drilled a pair of shots from long range and finished with 18 points for the team from Cyprus.

Olin Edirne lost, despite hitting 11 of 21 shots from behind the arc.

ETHA were 18 of 23 at the free-throw line compared to just seven of 12 for the hosts.

In a thrilling encounter, ETHA went in front by 12 points in the second quarter but the Turkish outfit stormed back.

There were four lead changes in the third quarter.

When Erdine's Christopher Wright hit a shot from the arc midway through the frame, the home team had a 50-47 advantage.

Jackson twice went to the line and made one of two free-throws to pull his team to within one.

Darryl Watkins then made a pair at the charity stripe for a 51-50 lead.

Thomas Massamba followed with a steal and passed to Jackson, who raced in for a lay-up and a three-point advantage.

Davud Kamer's dunk reduced the arrears to just one again for Edirne, but Massamba drove in for a lay-up and Watkins dunked to start a 9-0 ETHA run that finished the quarter.

A Jackson three-ball capped the spurt and made it 62-52 for ETHA going to the last period.

Edirne got no closer than five points in the last quarter.

Massamba finished with four steals and Edirne walked off the court with 19 turnovers.
