GAME REPORT

Chalon Advance With Win At Enisey

Elan Chalon booked their place in the Last 16 of the EuroChallenge and dashed BC Enisey's hopes of progressing with a thrilling win in Russia on Tuesday.

Blake Schilb had 21 points, including the game-winning free-throw right before the end in an 80-79 victory for Chalon.

The French club improved to 4-1 with the victory in Group E and Enisey fell to 1-4.

The Russian team had high hopes in Europe after coming back from a huge deficit to win their Qualifying Round tie against Spartak Primorye but since opening their regular season campaign with a victory over Antwerp Giants, the club has lost four straight.

Marko Marinovic had been a major reason why Enisey made it into the EuroChallenge because he had 29 points in the second-leg win over Spartak and on Tuesday, he also had a chance to put his team into a late lead.

Trailing by one with 24 seconds to go, the Serbian guard was fouled by Nicolas Lang and went to the line but only made the first of two free-throws to knot the game at 79-79.

Chalon turned to Schilb, who launched a shot from long range with nine seconds to go but missed.

Abdul Aminu grabbed one of his eight rebounds, however, to keep the ball in the hands of Chalon and Schilb was fouled by veteran forward Jasmin Hukic of Enisey just before the end of the contest.

Schilb sank the first free-throw for the one-point triumph.

Enisey will know the result might have been different had they been able to hit their free-throws but they missed 13 of 40 for a 67.5% effort.

Lonny Baxter had 22 points in defeat.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes BC Enisey vs. Elan Chalon

Elan Chalon player Bryant Smith:
"It was a challenging game, we started off relaxed but later summoned up and that led us to the victory."

Elan Chalon head coach Gregor Beugnot:
"It was a very important game, especially for Enisey. We knew that it was their last chance to keep playing in the EuroChallenge. We focused on winning, if we thought of the score difference we could have lost."

Enisey player Vyacheslav Zaitsev:
"It was a hard game in which we unfortunately failed to win. We had too many turnovers and missed some open shots. We did believe that we can win by 8 points and we were getting ready for that, but failed."

Enisey head coach Stevan Karadzic:
"We started the first quarter not as we meant to: we were soft, with no pressure, not with the speed that we needed. That gave confidence to opponents. In the second quarter we played like we should and I told the players that this is the attitude which will lead us to success, but we started the third quarter just like the first one. Also we missed too many free throws which was more of a mental problem. The last free throw Marinovic missed on purpose, in order to play overtime and reach +8 result. When we were leading by 5 points in last minutes, the players started shooting three-pointers, which they missed, whereas they should have played Baxter and to reach the required score by two-point shots."
