BK Ventspils edged a 79-78 Group D thriller at Atomerömü SE on Tuesday to seal a spot in the next phase of the EuroChallenge.
In one of the most exciting games of the campaign, Lorenzo Williams' three-point play with 12 seconds to go gave the Hungarian side a 78-76 lead.
Bojan Bakic went to the other end for Ventspils, however, and drilled a three-pointer to lift the Latvian outfit to a narrow win.
Ventspils improved to 4-1 with the victory and clinched a spot in the Last 16.
Atomerömü, having suffered a 76-73 home setback to Khimik two weeks ago, suffered another frustrating defeat in front of their own fans.
Steven Gray poured in 26 points and Arturs Berzins 21.
Gundars Vetra's side won despite playing without leading scorer Jahmar Young, who has averaged 18 points per game this season.
Atomerömü head coach Peter Völgyi:
"We played a good game, but we couldn't do anything against Steven Gray, he played very well. We made a few mistakes in defence, and we didn't have luck."
Ventpils head coach Gundars Vetra:
"It was an important game for both teams, I'm happy that we won. We had some problems against Lorenzo Williams, but we could slow down the opponent in the last quarter with our zone defence. It was the key for the win."
Atomerömü player David Vojvoda:
"I'm very sad, because we had a great chance to win, and this match was the last chance to qualify to the next round. The opponents' last shot was incredible, we had no luck tonight."
Ventspils head coach Steven Gray:
"It was a though game, both teams battled hard for the victory. Atomerőmű played very well, but fortunatelly we could score in the importent moments. I'm happy, that I played a good game, and could help to my team to earn victory."
