BK Ventspils moved top of EuroChallenge Group D with an 81-55 home triumph over Khimik Yuzhny on Tuesday evening. Gundars Vetra's team, which won for the third time in four games in the competition, built a 40-26 lead by half-time and never looked back. They ended up nailing 12 of their 18 shots from long range in the contest. A couple of standout performers in Latvia's EuroBasket 2011 squad led the Baltic club in scoring. Martins Meiers, a 20-year-old center, had 16 points and power forward Arturs Berzins contributed 15. The hosts were on top 15-13 when Martins Laksa nailed a shot from the arc for a five-point advantage at the end of the opening quarter. After Laksa split two attempts from the free-throw line at the start of the second quarter, Jahmar Young connected from long range for a 22-13 advantage. Ventspils pulled away for a comfortable win. Steven Gray had eight of his 11 points in the first half and Young nine of his 14. Recent signing Todd Abernethy finished with six points and four assists for the Latvian team. Khimik, who lost for the second time in four EuroChallenge games, got 15 points and eight boards from Reyshawn Terry. |

"I don't know how to comment this game. I cannot find any excuse for our team. We tried to play good defence, but it did not work out. The team lost its confidence with every minute and we became weaker. There is no excuse for this. It seemed that our ball was too big for the basket ring tonight." Khimik player Sergiy Popov:
