GAME REPORT

BC NN Down Khimik In Russia

31. Ivan Paunic (BC NN)
BC NN's Ivan Paunic led all scorers with 19 points

BC NN got their EuroChallenge campaign on track with an 85-73 triumph over Khimik Yuzhny on Tuesday.

The Nizhny Novgorod club, which lost at Hungarian outfit Atomerömü SE in their opener last week, got 19 points from Ivan Paunic as they bounced back in front of their home fans.

The result has left both sides with 1-1 records in Group D.

BC NN had a couple of important scoring stretches that put them on their way to victory.

On top 18-17, BC NN's Michal Ignerski made a lay-up to spark a 7-0 run that was capped by an Ernest Bremer three-ball.

After taking a 43-33 lead to the break, BC NN returned to the floor and took a firm grip on proceedings.

With 6:39 to go in the third quarter, Artem Yakovenko nailed one of his two three-pointers in the contest.

BC NN's Bremer then stole the ball from Darrel Mitchell and following a Khimik timeout, Paunic passed to Ivan Nelyubov and he dunked for a 53-39 lead.

An Ignerski three-point play not long after stretched the advantage to 60-43.

Khimik pulled to within nine earlier in the fourth quarter but got no closer.

Ignerski, Bremer and Nemanja Protic each weighed in with 12 points for BC NN and Nelyubov finished with 10.

For Khimik, Aaron McGhee had 15 points and Popov 14.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes BC NN vs. Khimik

BC Khimik Head Coach Darko Russo
"It's our worst game in the beginning of this season. We had a terrible trip from Yuzhny to Nizhny Novgorod but it is not the explanation or excuse. We were absolutely out of concentration from the first minutes. We lost 14 free throws. We couldn't open the game with any offence. We were out of concentration on defense. Nizhny Novgorod absolutely deserves this win. They played tough on defense, they played clever on offence. I'm happy that the score difference is not so big."

BC NN Head Coach Zoran Lukic
"It would be harder to contend the victory in Eurochallenge, if we lost this game. All the players knew this, that's why they were a little bit under pressure. Unfortunately my players didn't do all the things that they were told to do and they lost their chance to score some additional points. Today we played with less energy than in the game against VEF but the quality of the game was even better. The quantity of assists was a crucial point in our game. We were at an advantage: 19 against 7 of our opponent. Unfortunately, we lost concentration at the end of the game. We could enlarge the score difference to 15-20 points but it didn't happen. And it's a merit of Khimik head coach Darko Russo who realized player rotation in time."

BC Khimik player Artem Pustovyi
"Our defense was poor. We let Nizhny Novgorod to grab plenty of offensive rebounds, and they scored a lot because of this. Nizhny Novgorod is a very good team, it's really tough to play against them. We tried to do our best but today fortune smiled to Nizhny Novgorod. They deserved to win."

BC NN player Michal Ignerski
"After our loss in Hungary, we were focused to win this game and we did all we were supposed to do and we won this game. It was a home game, so we were supposed to win. Now we've got the Russian League games and we have to be prepared for them."
