Khimik Cruise In Final Game

Khimik Yuzhny signed off from their EuroChallenge campaign with a convincing victory over Hungarians Atomerömü SE.

In a contest between two sides that had no chances of reaching the Last 16, Khimik prevailed 83-58.

The Ukrainian team sealed a third-place finish in Group D with three wins and three defeats and Atomerömü (1-5) ended up in fourth.

Atomerömü scored the game's first two points with 17 seconds gone but then allowed Khimik to go on a 23-0 run.

The visitors didn't add to their total until 2:55 remained in the frame when Gergely Körtélyesi connected from behind the arc to make it 23-5.

Khimik had a 25-10 lead by the end of the first period and stretched the advantage to 22 late in the second quarter.

The winning team's Sergiy Popov had 15 points to lead his side in scoring.

Donald Cole had a game-high 17 points in defeat.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Khimik vs. Atomerömü SE

Atomerömü Head Coach Peter Völgyi
"In this game both teams tried to do something for the future in local championships. Eurochallenge was a good experience for our players. We would like to play in Eurochallenge next season to get more experience for us. I want to congratulate Khimik, because they were much better tonight."

Khimik Head Coach Darko Russo
"First of all we were serious, very serious. We got this game very seriously. We played well, hard in defense. We tried to change defense. We were practicing for the last three days. We have some new offense and some new defense and we wanted to try it tonight. Everybody got a chance today and they played ok. I'm not satisfied of the season in Eurochallenge because we didn't pass to the second round. The key game for us was the last one against the Russian team. They won and passed to the next round, but it's basketball and we can't win every day."

Atomerömü player Lorenzo Williams
"We didn't come out with enough energy in the start of the game. We were not enough focused on the game and Khimik led early. We played very well in the whole Eurochallenge season, but not today."

Khimik player Olexandr Belikov
"We didn't depend on the result of this game. We played our new combinations. Every player of our team was on the court. I hope our coach is happy."
