Cras Basket Taranto had to scrap but overcame a battling Frisco Sika Brno in the Czech Republic on Wednesday evening for their second win in this season's EuroLeague Women.
Kia Vaughn led the Taranto attack with 16 points as the Italian club prevailed, 66-59.
Brno led 39-35 four minutes into the second half to fill their fans' hopes of a first triumph of their European campaign.
But Vaughn hit a jump shot and then a lay-up to take her points haul to 14 and knot the contest at 39-39.
The two shots also sparked a 12-0 run that put Taranto in front to stay.
Fariya Abdi, Brno's sensational teenager, scored at the end of the third quarter to close the gap to 47-43, and the Swede then buried a shot at the start of the fourth.
Angela Gianolla replied for Taranto, though, as the visitors stayed on top.
Giorgia Sottana had a solid game for Taranto, scoring 13 points.
Elodie Godin also weighed in with 12.
For Brno, Ashley Robinson scored 15 points and both Abdi and Jasmine Thomas poured in 14.
Frisco Brno Head Coach Jan Bobrovský:
"I think, it was a tough game. We played our best game so far in this EuroLeague season. We improved our defence and I was satisfied with our performance in the first half. But in the third quarter our offence was very bad. We couldn´t score a point for four minutes. Taranto in this part of the game surprised us with a zone defence and capitalised with 12 points off our turnovers. This part [of the game] decided the result."
Brno center Ashley Robinson:
"In the beginning we played our basketball. It was a tough game, we played better in defence. In the second half we lost a lot of balls, Taranto played better in this part of the game and began to defend strongly. We lost power in the end."
Cras Basket Taranto Coach Roberto Ricchini:
"We knew that we'd have a difficult game in Brno. We had a problems because we had two players injured. In the first period Brno was more aggressive and their center Ashley Robinson was strong in rebounds and shooting. In the third quarter we improved our defence and played more aggressive inside. For our team it was a very important victory."
Cras Taranto center Dubravka Dacic:
"It was a difficult game for us. We had problems to made a break. We made a big improvement in the third quarter scroing twelve point in a row. This was important for our team, to break open an otherwise close game. In the second half we played our basketball as we can."
