|Elodie Godin led Cras Basket Taranto to a win in their last EuroLeague Women game of the season|
Cras Basket Taranto ended their EuroLeague Women campaign with a 68-65 home victory over Rivas Ecopolis on Wednesday evening.
The Italians improved to 6-8, the same record as Lattes Montpellier in Group C, but the French club came in fifth and snatched the last play-off spot by virtue of a better goal differential in their two meetings.
Rivas were aiming for their ninth victory and had a great chance of getting it.
Essence Carson gave the Spaniards a 65-62 lead with 2:30 remaining but Meghan Mahoney cut the gap to one with a jump shot and Elodie Godin followed with another for a 66-65 Taranto advantage.
Twice Rivas had opportunities to go back in front but Laura Nicholls and Asjha Jones were off target with shots.
Rivas fouled Godin with 21 seconds to play and the France international made just one of two to put the hosts in front by two.
Rivas got the ball to Elisa Aguilar but the veteran point guard missed from behind the arc and Taranto rebounded.
Mahoney made one of two free-throws at the end to finish the scoring.
Godin had 12 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for Taranto.
Jones scored a game-high 17 points and Carson contributed 15 in defeat.
"This victory has a valuable asset, because it says that Cras is growing. We leave the EuroLeague for past errors, but now we concentrate on important Italian objectives."
Cras player Angela Gianolla
"This victory says that Cras is focused and aims to get away. We still regret for the missed EuroLeague play-offs"
Rivas Ecopolis Head Coach Miguel Martinez Mendez
"Taranto has shown more strength and will to win. We have played not always well, but I'm happy becaus we are the fourth force of Euroleague. Now we concentrate on the second round of Euroleague."
Rivas Ecopolis forward Essence Carson
"We are so sorry for this loss. Now we must work to rediscover our game in the second round of Euroleague."
