Lattes Montpellier had to go to overtime but finally saw off the challenge of Gospic Croatia in France on Wednesday night. In the EuroLeague Women Group C encounter, the French team prevailed to improve to 6-6 and strengthen their grip on fifth place. If they finish the group in that position, Lattes Montpellier will progress to Round 2. Gospic Croatia almost stole victory, however. Julie McBride scored the last seven points of regulation for Gospic to tie the contest at 74-74 but missed a potential game-winner at the death. The hosts then recovered in the extra period, with Fatimatou Sacko scoring the first points and shooting guard Gaelle Skrela following with two free-throws for a 78-74 lead. Marija Vrsaljko replied with a jump shot for Gospic, but Sacko scored again with a fast-break jumper and Edwige Lawson then drove a nail in the Gospic coffin with a three-pointer for an 83-76 Montpellier advantage. McBride gave the visitors hope with a lay-up on the fast break but Kristen Mann answered for BLMA to stretch the advantage back to seven. Sandra Mandir again fueled hopes in the Gospic ranks with a three-ball to cut the hosts' advantage to 85-81. Mann and Lawson ended the scoring, however, with jump shots for BLMA as they improved to 6-6. With the defeat, Gospic slumped to 4-8. |
