GAME REPORT

Rivas Back To Winning Ways

14. Asjha Jones (Rivas Ecopolis)
Asjha Jones seemed unstoppable at times, finishing with 31 points and 13 rebounds for Rivas Ecopolis

Rivas Ecopolis broke open a tight game at the start of the second half and thumped Lattes Montpellier in an important Group C encounter in the EuroLeague Women.

Team USA Olympic hopeful Asjha Jones had 31 points and 13 rebounds for the Madrid team, which won the battle of 5-5 teams, 82-63.

Rivas only led 39-37 a minute into the third quarter after a basket by Montpellier's Sandra Dijon.

Laura Nicholls answered with two free-throws, though, and Anna Cruz followed with a couple of lay-ups as the hosts opened up a 45-37 advantage.

After Nicholls made two more from the charity stripe, Jones went up strong down low for a basket before Essence Carson lowered the boom with a three-pointer.

BLMA never recovered.

They trailed 64-47 by the end of the third quarter and ended up falling by 19.

Jones had 20 of her points in the second half.

Rivas finished with 18 assists to just six for the visitors, and they also forced BLMA to turn the ball over 18 times.

The Spaniards made 15 of their 16 attempts at the free-throw line while BLMA were eight of 14.

Rivas snapped a three-game losing skid.

The French club lost both of its encounters to Rivas.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Rivas Ecópolis vs BLMA

Rivas power forward Asjha Jones

“This game was very important for us, so we were so focused on playing well. I think everybody was aggressive tonight, playing hard, taking charges, it was a team effort and everybody did a good job being aggressive.”

Rivas head coach Miguel Méndez
“That was a very important game for us, and the answer of the players has been tremendous. They were so intense, with a great rhythm both sides of the court, and not thinking about how long could the game be. They kept their effort for the whole 40 minutes against a very physical team, it was a complete game for us."

BLMA point guard Edwige Lawson

“We played very bad defence against a great team with great players. Asjha Jones had an amazing game tonight, and we were one man down, a big part of our team. Then another player got hurt, it was too hard for us to come back to the game when they built a solid lead."

BLMA head coach Valéry Demory
“I don’t want to put any excuses, we played bad today, with no rhythm in defence, no rhythm in offence, many turnovers, it was a bad defeat for my team today."
