|Erin Phillips and Wisla Can-Pack opened the season with a tough win over Kosice|
Wisla Can-Pack Krakow coach Jose Ignacio Hernandez knew exactly what he was getting when Anke De Mondt joined the club from Perfumerias Avenida in the summer.
Hernandez once coached the Belgian sharpshooter in Salamanca and the two made it all the way to the EuroLeague Women Final with Avenida in 2009 before falling to Sparta&K Moscow Region.
On Wednesday, the opening night of the EuroLeague Women, the De Mondt signing paid an early dividend for the Polish team as she scored a game-high 15 points in a 52-45 Group C win over Good Angels Kosice.
De Mondt, who won the EuroLeague last season with Avenida when the Final Four was staged in Ekaterinburg, had 11 points nearly 18 minutes into the contest as the hosts took a 27-18 lead.
Her next basket, a jumper with 4:19 remaining in the third quarter, pushed the advantage to 37-25.
Kosice did a great job of staying within striking distance.
Natalia Vieru, Danielle McCray and Lucia Kupcikova each had baskets that pulled Good Angels to within five points.
But the Slovakians got no closer.
Wisla struggled from the line at first but ended up hitting their last 10 attempts and finished 12 of 17 on the night.
If Hernandez was happy with De Mondt, who played 34 minutes, he would have been equally excited by the play of Hungarian center Petra Ujhelyi.
She had a game-high 12 rebounds to go with her six points.
McCray's 13 points led Good Angels.
Wisla captain Ewelina Kobryn did not play in the game.
Good Angels Head Coach Stefan Svitek:
"Congrats for the Wisla CP team. The game was good on defence but on offence both teams had many problems. We were not able to win that game - Wisla was too strong for us."
Wisla Head Coach Jose Hernandez:
"I am happy that we won. I am not happy of the style of my Team. We must improve it. The defence was excellent. We had a problem because of Ewelina Kobryn's sicknes. It was hard to replace her."
