Frisco Sika Brno clinched their first victory of the EuroLeague Women season Wednesday night and knocked Wisla Can-Pack Krakow from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Two of Europe's most promising youngsters, 20-year-old Alena Hanusová of the Czech Republic and Sweden's 19-year-old Farhiya Abdi, had huge games for Brno in a 70-65 triumph.
Hanusová, a member of the Czechs' EuroBasket Women squad this summer, had 17 points and eight rebounds while Abdi poured in 16 points and corralled nine boards.
In a close game from start to finish, Wisla went on top 58-56 with 6:43 to go when Erin Phillips buried a three-ball and took her points tally to 18.
But Abdi answered with a jumper to knot the game.
A pair of Tereza Peckova lay-ups sandwiched another drive by Hanusová to complete the 8-0 run that put Brno in front at 64-58.
Jan Bobrosky's team kept their noses in front the rest of the way, although Wisla kept the contest close.
A pair of Phillips free-throws reduced the deficit to 64-62 with 1:30 to play, however, Jasmine Thomas replied with a bucket for the hosts as they stayed on top.
Peckova finished with 13 points and Thomas 11.
Phillips had a game-high 22 points in defeat, and teammate Milka Bjelica had 16 rebounds to go with her 13 points.
Brno are now 1-3 in Group C and Wisla are 3-1.
Frisco Brno Head Coach Jan Bobrovský:
"I am very satisfied with today's victory. We lost the game against Taranto in the end last week. It would have been bad luck for us if we lost for the second time today. We knew the power of Wisla Krakow. We played without our higher center Robinson, she was injured. I must give compliments to our players for fighting."
Brno Forward Alena Hanušová:
"It´s very good for our psychologie than we win today against an unbeaten team. Wisla had smaller wings and it was our advantage. We shot a few lucky points. I must say we played better in defence today and that was important for our victory. I am very glad with my individual performance in the EuroLeague today. The fans of Wisla were very noisy and crazy."
Wisla Krakow Head Coach Jose Hernández:
"Brno was better in every moment. Our rivals played ambitious, more aggressive and dominated on the court. The game was tought but small details decided about the result. We didn´t play good today and we made important mistakes."
Wisla Point Guard Erin Phillips:
"My individual performance does not matter. I mean that we lost the game. We are very disappointed as a team. I want to congratulate Brno team to the victory. Our rivals faught more than us every minute. This is a very big learning experience for us and big reality. Is not acceptable to play like this in the next game.
