For a team that's supposed to be in rebuilding mode after parting with most of the players that captured a EuroLeague Women and Liga Femenina double last season, Perfumerias Avenida look pretty dangerous right about now.
On Wednesday night, roared on again by arguably the best crowd in the women's game, the Salamanca club beat Tarbes, 78-70, for a fourth straight victory in Europe.
Trailing 34-25 a minute into the third quarter after a three-ball by Pauline Krawczyk of Tarbes, Avenida rallied in the EuroLeague Women Group B clash.
Dewanna Bonner started the comeback with a three-pointer and then Erika De Souza followed with a jump shot.
Veteran point guard Laura Antoja drilled a shot from the arc to close the gap to one before shooting guard Isa Sanchez scored with another jumper on an Avenida fast-break to put the hosts in front.
Mondelo's team ended up scoring 15 unanswered points and never trailed again.
They went on top by 16 and although Tarbes closed the gap to 75-70 with 20 seconds to go, Avenida were not to be denied.
Bonner, a EuroLeague Women All-Star last season while on the books of Rivas Ecopolis, led the winners with 24 points.
De Souza finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Tarbes head coach Pascal Pisan:
"We managed to compete until halftime. From then on Avenida's potential took over the game. We should have played slower than we did, but Avenida started to step up on deffense and were able to get easy scores. I'm proud of my team and now we have to think about this weekend's French championship game."
Avenida head coach Lucas Mondelo:
"We did not come out with the intensity and focus that we needed, we cannot disrespect our opponents. We adjusted during the halftime and played a great third quarter where we decided the game in our favour. We are doing great things with our 34th win in a row. This team is making history."
