CCC Polkowice broke into the win column in thrilling fashion in the EuroLeague Women on Wednesday night in Poland.
Sharnee Zoll had 21 points, 10 assists and three steals to lead the Polish team to a 68-66 win over Beretta-Famila Schio.
The Italian club, trailing by nine late in the third quarter, clawed their way back and went in front at 62-61 with 2:44 remaining when Liron Cohen buried a three-ball.
Gintare Petronyte, the Lithuania national team center, answered with a jumper after catching a pass from Zoll and then Iva Perovanovic drilled a jump shot on a fast break to stretch the lead to 65-62.
The game had a nail-biting finish.
After Janel McCarville replied with a jumper, Zoll scored on a drive to stretch the advantage to 67-63.
Then with 43 seconds to go, Schio kept the pressure on as Maja Erkic scored with a jump shot to reduce the arrears to 67-65.
After Petronyte missed, Schio had a chance to go back in front.
But Petronyte intercepted a McCarville pass, drew a foul from Laura Macchi and sank one of two free-throws.
Following a Schio timeout, Cohen missed from long range and Polkowice held on.
Perovanovic had 15 points for Polkowice while for the Italians, who fell to 1-3 in Group B with the defeat, Macchi scored 15.
Beretta-Famila Schio Head Coach Maurizio Lasi:
"It was really physical game. We made a lot of mistakes, and we lost this game. We have got problems with inside scoring. CCC scored too many inside points. This was a really exciting game. I would like to congrtulate CCC"
Beretta-Famila Schio Point Guard Liron Cohen:
"Congratluations to Polkowice. It is always nice to play here. We didn`t play good. We played good only in the last quarter but it was not enough. We have done a lot of work today but we lost. Now we must work harder."
CCC Polkowice player Sharnee Zoll:
"For us that was a really important game. We wanted to win for the first time in the EuroLeague. It was a physical game. We made less turnovers than Schio and I think that was the main reason of our win. I`m proud of my team because it was a historical win for us."
CCC Polkowice Head Coach Lucas Mondelo:
"We are happy. We had to work so hard to win but we made it. We need to be patient. I hope that for us it will be a key moment and in next games we will be better and better. I would like to tell thanks Sharnee. She played wonderful today. We`ve got the first win now, I hope that we will win win in the next games too. "
