Lotos Gdynia put forth a gallant second-half effort and won at VICI Aistes in the EuroLeague Women Group A on Wednesday.
In a fight between two sides with no chances of progressing from Group A, Javier Fort's team battled and deservedly clinched a third win of its European campaign.
Gdynia trailed by 10 points in the first half but clawed their way back and went to half-time down, 38-36.
The visitors took their first lead midway through the third quarter when Geraldine Robert made a jump shot.
Courtnay Pilypaitis answered with a three-pointer for VICI Aistes to reclaim the advantage for the hosts.
The game stayed tight into the fourth quarter.
With 4:25 to go and Gdynia in front, 62-58, Jolene Anderson nailed a three-ball and that sucked the life out of the Lithuanians.
VICI Aistes fell to 2-11 with the setback.
Anderson finished with 22 points for Gdynia and Vita Kuktiene ended up with 19 for VICI Aistes.
Lotos Gdynia Head Coach Javier Fort
"We had the goal to be better on defense and try to get a first away victory in the EuroLeague Women. I am happy with my team. In the second half, we let Kaunas score only 22 points and that was the key to win this game. At the beginning we were not focused, we didn't play hard, we let Kaunas shooters make baskets, and that was the problem."
VICI Aistes Head Coach Mantas Sernius
"We wanted to win very much. We had a game plan, which worked well in the first half of the game. I am not devastated because we lost our concentration and made some crucial mistakes in the middle of the third quarter, which cost us too much psychologically and we could not return to the way we started the game."
Lotos Gdynia player Adrijana Knezevic
"We knew they had very good shooters from the outside and we prepared well for this game. I'm happy for how my team played today on defense and offence. This is our first away victory in the EuroLeague Women. We don't go to the next round but it's important for us to keep working this way. VICI fought well, so I just wish them luck in their national league."
VICI Aistes player Vita Kuktiene
"We started good, we were focused but I don't know what happened. We tried to play our game but something went wrong. This was our last home game in the EuroLeague Women, so I want to thank all our fans for their support during the season."
